Stepping out of college with an architecture degree, you're thinking of all the different kinds of buildings you will design. But the real world often paints a different picture.
1. The First Job Reality Check:
You join an architecture firm, excited and full of ideas. However, the reality is a modest paycheck (think 30,000/month), long hours (50-60 per week), and a work environment that's more often than not, toxic. The tasks are menial. And it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get a client-facing role to start with.
2. Picturing Your Future:
In the midst of the daily grind, pause and envision where you want to be in five years. Do you see yourself making your way up in an established architecture firm? Or are you going to become the architect of your own firm? Both paths have their merits and challenges.
3. If a job is what works for you, upskill yourself. While most people in India still use AutoCAD, invest in learning a BIM (Building Information Modeling) software, because that's where the industry is headed. Revit by Autodesk is a great example of a BIM software.
4. The Freelance Balancing Act:
You’ll notice that many of your colleagues are undertaking freelance projects alongside their full-time jobs. This requires a blend of tech-savvy and efficient processes. Automating your solo projects can make this balancing act more manageable. For example, having repeatable design templates, pre-made working drawing sets you can tweak as per project requirements, client and third-party contracts, and client questionnaires will significantly reduce design timelines of your freelance projects.
5. Material Market Survey and Research: As a fresher, you'll have nearly zero knowledge of the materials and brands that exist in the market. Visit the popular markets and hotspots in your city (furniture, lighting, marble, tiles, sanitaryware, etc.) to educate yourself.
6. Technology as Your Ally:
The field of architecture is rapidly embracing technology. AI-powered tools such as Midjourney and Leonardo are great for initial concept development and creating various design options. Morpholio Board is a great tool for generating digital mood boards.
7. Building Your Brand:
While your degree taught you how to design, it didn't teach you how to run a business or market yourself. This is where networking comes into play. Attend industry events, be active on platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn, and build a website to showcase your work. You can use Wix and similar no-code platforms to create a compelling website. This is how you build your credibility fast.
Your journey from a graduate to a professional is filled with learning curves. Stay flexible. And learn continuously.
Remember, every architect started somewhere. Your journey is unique, and each step, no matter how small, is a progression towards becoming a Starchitect!
